Welcoming 2025 with the power of local knowledge
As we move through 2025, the importance of inclusive communities in regional and coastal NSW has never been more apparent. Caringa’s new and returning board members play a vital role in shaping our community and disability services as well as proudly promoting advocacy across our diverse regions – from the bustling coastal towns of Yamba and Iluka, to the city hubs of Coffs Harbour; and deep into the close knit inland communities of Glenragh or Lawrence.
As our Norther Rivers regional areas continue to grow and change, so too does the need for innovative approaches to disability, support and advocacy. Whether it’s leveraging technology to connect remote communities, developing targeted programs for rural areas, or fostering partnerships with local collaborative services, the Caringa board members are at the forefront of driving positive change.

True inclusion means having diverse voices
The Caringa Community proudly and warmly welcome Timothy White, Phil Elliot, Deborah Vlastaras, Josh Craig, Darren Kershaw and Vicki St Lawrence to the board of elected volunteer directors who oversee the stewardship of our organisation.
These dedicated individuals bring together lived experience, professional expertise, and deep community connections to ensure that Caringa and our wide range of services remain responsive, innovative, and truly representative of the communities we serve. Their commitment goes beyond monthly meetings – they’re active voices in their communities, building bridges between service providers, families, and people with disability.
In our regional and coastal areas, where resources and services can be more dispersed than in metropolitan centres, our Caringa board members are essential in identifying local needs and championing accessible solutions. They understand that inclusion isn’t just about physical access – it’s about creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and thrive.
Through governance and advocacy work, our Caringa board members are helping to shape a future where disability services are not just available – but are deeply and genuinely integrated into the fabric of the Coffs Coast and Clarence Valley. We are excited to share their diverse perspectives and unwavering dedication with not only the Caringa Community; but our widening and expanding reach; to ensure that Caringa services remain grounded in real community needs while pushing forward with innovative approaches to support and inclusion.
As we start to sink into collaboration with these community leaders who volunteer their time and expertise to build more inclusive communities across the Caringa neighbourhoods; we are proud to acknowledge that their work reminds us that true inclusion is built on local understanding, genuine commitment, and active community participation.
We can’t wait to share what is to come in the year ahead for the Caringa Community and beyond.

(L-R) – Joshua Craig, Darren Kershaw, Caringa CEO Leon Ankersmit, Vicki St Lawrence and Timothy White.
