Caringa’s Exciting Journey to Oz Comic-Con Brisbane
Blog Creative & Editing: Josh Ridley for Caringa
In a world where superheroes often grace our screens, a group of extraordinary individuals from the Caringa Community proved that real-life superheroes walk among us every day.
In August and September, Caringa, in partnership with Sprung!! Integrated Dance Theatre, embarked on an unforgettable adventure together, with Oz Comic-Con in Brisbane as the end destination in sight – turning a dream into reality for several participants of the Suburban Superhero Workshop.
The Genesis: Sprung!! Suburban Superhero Workshop
Our journey began in August when Caringa joined forces with Sprung!!, a not-for-profit community organization based in the Northern Rivers of NSW. Sprung!! is renowned for its contemporary dance and community arts programs tailored for emerging d/Deaf and disabled artists. Together, we brought the innovative Suburban Superhero Workshop to Grafton.
Led by the talented neurodivergent artist Lewis, and accompanied by mover and storyteller Katie, this workshop was more than just a creative outlet—it was a transformative experience. Participants delved into the art of costume design and character development, exploring the concept of everyday superheroes. Over two intensive days, they breathed life into their unique superhero personas, designing and crafting bespoke costumes that reflected their inner strengths and aspirations.
From Workshop to Wonderland: The Oz Comic-Con Excursion
The excitement reached fever pitch on September 13th when Ben, Sig, Abe, Rodney, Jess, Jason and Lelana set off for Brisbane ~ drawing on their time in Spark Studio + the Suburban Superhero Workshops, hidden secret new powers in their tool belts; ready to use as new skills and strengths.
Their destination? The dazzling world of Oz Comic-Con.
As we stepped into the convention centre, age truly became just a number, and passion knew no bounds. The air buzzed with excitement as our Superhero Squad embarked on a thrilling two-day journey filled with adventure, laughter, and all things pop culture.

A Celebration of Diversity and Passion
Oz Comic-Con proved to be more than just an event—it was a celebration of the rich tapestry of pop culture fandoms. The inclusive atmosphere provided the perfect platform for fans of all ages and interests to come together, sharing their love for various aspects of popular culture.
Our adventurous heroes found themselves immersed in a world where their unique superhero creations were not only accepted but celebrated. They stood tall among seasoned cosplayers, comic book enthusiasts, and pop culture aficionados, their homemade costumes drawing admiring glances and sparking conversations.
ABE as SUPERMAN
Connections Beyond Boundaries
What truly set this experience apart was the connections formed. Ben discovered fellow superhero enthusiasts keen on cape design. Sig found kindred spirits in everyone who shared bold and open representation in comics. Abe and Rodney’s eyes lit up as they explored stalls filled with memorabilia from their favourite childhood franchises.
Jess, Jason and Lelana, initially nervous about the crowds, soon found themselves at ease in this wildly accepting environment. They watched in panel discussions, and the Super Squad was proud to bring our unique perspectives to conversations about inclusivity in the pop culture sphere.
SIG AS THE RED DEVIL
More Than Just an Event
For the Caringa Super Squad, Oz Comic-Con was more than just a convention—it was a transformative experience. It showed us that our passions, creativity, and unique perspectives have a place in the wider world. The event fostered a sense of belonging and self-confidence that extended far beyond the convention halls.
As we watched our crew navigate the bustling convention floor, engaged in animated discussions, and proudly showcased their superhero personas, it became clear that the real superpower on display was the ability to embrace one’s true self without fear or hesitation.

The Journey Home: Changed for the Better
As we boarded the space shuttle back to the Clarence Valley solar system, the excitement was palpable. Our participants shared animatedly about their experiences, the people they met, and the inspiration they gained. We returned not just with bags full of merchandise and memories, but with a newfound confidence and a broader perspective on the world and our place in it.
Looking to the Future
This excursion to Oz Comic-Con was more than just a fun outing—it was a testament to the power of inclusive programs like the Suburban Superhero Workshop. It showed how initiatives that embrace creativity, self-expression, and community can open up new worlds of possibility for participants.
As we look to the future, Caringa remains committed to creating more such opportunities. We believe that every individual has a unique superpower, and our goal is to help them discover and celebrate it.
In the words of one of our heroes, “I never thought I could be a superhero, but now I know I’ve been one all along.” And isn’t that the greatest superpower of all—the ability to recognise the hero within ourselves and others?
As we conclude this chapter of our Oz Comic-Con adventure, we’re already looking forward to the next exciting journey. At Caringa, we believe that every day holds the potential for heroic adventures, both big and small.
Remember, in the story of life, you’re not just a spectator
you’re the superhero of your narrative.
Embrace your power, celebrate your uniqueness
and let your inner hero shine
